Whether you’re looking to enhance a small space or colorfully accent a larger one, container gardening is a terrific way to introduce new design elements to an outdoor area. Jim Bixler, horticulturist for Third Street South, was recently interviewed by Naples Daily News about his recommendations on how to optimize your container gardens. All along Third Street South, with a strong influence from European-style gardens, Jim thoughtfully mixes color, height, and texture to create the ambiance that Third Street is known for. Passers-by may not immediately recognize the degree of planning that goes into the design, with more tropical plants gracing the front of Tommy Bahama and flowing shapes decorating Lilly Pulitzer. Jim recommends taking care to ensure that the plants you choose to group together are basically compatible in terms of their need for sun exposure or water, but also encourages experimenting with your garden. Have fun mixing and matching and changing vignettes seasonally. Part of the enjoyment of container gardens is their flexibility. So have fun with it, and perhaps take a stroll down Third Street South for inspiration!
