Masks, distancing and handwashing continue to be important. The CDC makes the clear point that even after some of us have been vaccinated and have waited the requisite time for the shots to be as effective as possible, masks, distancing, and handwashing are and will be essential to getting COVID-19 and its variants under control. Third Street South embraced this position from the start of the pandemic for everyone’s health—and to enable our economy and us to return fully as fast as possible.
Take, for example, the beloved Third Street South Farmer’s Market. As many more people have returned to Naples and others are pouring in, the market is increasingly popular. We know that most people are honoring the requirements for masks and distancing (which are both requested and required by the City). To those who are not, please comply so there is minimal risk of harm to any visitor or vendor—and no risk that the market might have to be stopped. No one wants that. Compliance is equally important for vendors as well as visitors, and most, like the Friendly Burds with their local honeys and exotic and interesting fruits, have always adhered. Those who do not will be reminded and they risk losing their spot in the market. This weekly gathering contributes substantially to local businesses’ bottom lines, as well as being an iconic local gathering place. We all want it to be safe and successful. When moving through the market, please wear masks and where possible maintain distancing. There are masks available at the Third Street South Merchants Association table and being offered by market helpers.
Third Street South’s shops and restaurants are similarly observing safety measures. On shop windows and doors, signs are posted requiring masks to enter, and within restaurants you’ll find signs posted reminding visitors that masks are respectfully required except when at your table to eat. Think of it, in restaurants, as automatic as having to wear shoes and shirts. Many stores and restaurants have disposable masks to offer, particularly the Naples Community Hospital three-ply masks which Neapolitan Enterprises in conjunction with NCH makes available. And a good many locations also have artisan cloth masks for sale. There is always just one more attractive one to be had.
On Third Street South, you’ll find clear deference to science, and a tradition of community that dates back over a century. As we gratefully observe the uptick in vaccines, as well as the endorsement by both our Naples City Council and Collier County Board of Commissioners of face masks, it is immeasurably pleasing to consider that we are all working and contributing to a return to a version of normal as soon as possible.
